   | | Manuel S. Silverman, Ph. D Many struggle with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders and/or other chronic illnesses. These illnesses create emotional struggles with negative effects on our lives and the lives of family, friends and others. While we seek intimacy and a sense of connection, they seem to continually elude us. I have a PhD degree in Psychology from Northwestern University and I am an Illinois Licensed Clinical Psychologist. As a psychologist working with mood disorders, I recognize the sense of frustration, anger, isolation and self-doubt that characterize these disorders and I have an especially strong commitment to education and treatment regarding these disorders. The treatment model that I use, the Decision Therapy Model, is particularly well suited for working with mood disorders. For those with mood disorders, thinking is faulty, memory is poor, and decision making is impaired Decision Therapy incorporates multi-modal behavioral techniques with selected aspects of experiential/humanistic approaches to effectively treat these disorders. The goal of Decision Therapy treatment is the reorientation of faulty thinking and illogical behavioral patterns. There is an exploration of past life decisions. This process facilitates change from old, unproductive and isolating behaviors into new, more effective and fulfilling patterns. There is a redirection of choices from no-win to no-lose behavior. New life decisions lead to higher levels of intimacy, enrichment and fulfillment. I currently serve as vice-president of the Chicago Chapter of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance and am also a member of the national organization and I am included in their list of professional speakers. I have served as a university professor and am the author of a text on substance abuse and over fifty articles on a wide range of topics in Psychology. My activities have also included presentations in the United States, Mexico, Canada, Singapore and the Philippines.
